11 Ways to Boost Your Energy in Under 10 Minutes

It’s 3 in the afternoon and suddenly all you can think about is taking a nap. You quickly realize you’re in your office or caring for your children so lying down is out of the question.

We’ve all been there, right? The mid-afternoon slump is real when we run out of energy. It doesn’t care if you’re in a meeting or caring for a toddler who recently gave up their naps.

What can you do to boost your energy quickly without climbing under your desk or chugging another cup of coffee?

I have 11 ways that will boost your energy right where you are. Let’s dive in and get you back on your feet (literally and figuratively speaking)!

  1. STRETCH. Yes, it seems simple and it is. But it’s also very effective in getting the blood flowing and relieving tension. Stand where you are, stretch your arms way up above your head, and take some slow easy breaths, or do a downward dog stretch like your cat or dog just waking up from a nap.
  2. EAT. Eat some fruits or vegetables with some protein to balance your blood sugar. Cut up an apple and have some cheese or peanut butter with it. Or some raw vegetables with hummus or cheese. Read more about how protein can help you in midlife in my blog post: Protein’s Health Benefits for Women in Midlife.
  3. HYDRATE. Having some water might be just what you need to feel energized. Fatigue and tiredness show up when you are dehydrated. Water helps transport nutrients and oxygen throughout your body.
  4. REDUCE STRESS. Is a deadline or hard conversation weighing you down? Set your timer for 10 minutes and draft the outline of what you want to say or start the project. It will reduce the stress that is exhausting you and help you get the task done. You may keep going after 10 minutes and realize it wasn’t so difficult after all.
  5. TALK. Get up from your desk and go have a chat with a neighbor or coworker. You may just need a break and a connection to motivate you to keep going with your day. If you’re home with children, chat with an uplifting family member or friend on the phone.
  6. DEEP BREATHE. Taking some deep breaths will deliver oxygen and nutrients to cells, which helps improve function in your organs and brain. Take slow controlled breaths to improve how you feel.
  7. WALK. Squeezing in a 10-minute walk outdoors while listening to some upbeat music will undoubtedly jump-start your energy. Give it a try! Moving throughout the day will also help you sleep better at night.
  8. LET THE SUNSHINE IN. Make sure that the room you are in is flooded with daylight. Open the blinds and let the sunshine in (hopefully there is sun out where you are) to boost your mood! It’s amazing what a little natural light can do!
  9. FUNNY VIDEO. Try watching a funny video on your phone or computer. A good laugh can improve your mood and energy level.
  10. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. If you can’t leave where you are, try moving your body with some jumping jacks, a quick dance session, or jogging in place. As a bonus, add some fun music! You’ll be re-energized in no time.
  11. CHANGE YOUR SCENERY. Sometimes all you need is a change of scenery. Step outside for a few minutes or go to a different room if you’re at home. A fresh perspective can do wonders for your energy levels.

Remember, these tips are quick fixes to get you through your day. For more long-term energy and mood improvements, focus on a healthy diet, taking supplements if needed, regular exercise, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep.

For those moments when you only have a few minutes and are confined to a certain area, these tricks should do the job of boosting your energy.

If the fatigue continues, check in with your doctor to check your overall health. Have a conversation about running some tests.

Let me know how you energize yourself each day. I’d love to hear from you!
